I had the opportunity to ask Thomas Crane that question leading up to his time with us at the Heart of Coaching workshop.  Here’s a preview of what you will hear at the May 20th workshop.

Q: Thanks for your time Tom. What is possible when leaders make the transformation from ‘boss’ to ‘coach’?

A: What we actually work with the notion of transformation the way we’re talking about it now is the difference in how a leader sees themselves is a transformation from “I am the boss of people” “Why, because I said so”, it’s old school, top down and theory X Management in action. And it doesn’t require me or engage me to be open to learn, to be as respectful as you’d like to be respected.

So when I spend time in that whole field of being ‘the boss of people’ we are limiting our effectiveness to engage and inspire performance which is what we are trying to create.

And anybody who is a boss, a supervisor, a leader, a manager… you’re trying to get results through people.

So the way we do that is to shift to being the coach for people, which is a service mind-set rather than a ‘boss of, or boss to’ people.

And that shifts how I think about people, how I value relationships, and allows me to become more deliberate and helpful in the way I deliver feedback.

In a service mind-set, I avoid the use of labels, and the conclusions I have reached about you which may be based in criticism.  For example to use a label that someone is ‘lazy’ is a presumption about something you’ve seen them do or say, and if you use a word like ‘lazy’ it’s an offensive behaviour that damages the relationship.

When we come from a service mind-set we learn to ask better questions, become a better listener, and we model accountability and what it means to be coachable.

A leader or a manager acting as a coach and embodying the idea of what it means to be a coach to inspire optimal performance, then they model the way of what it means to be a coach.

And that transformation is really what makes this thing incredible.  You’ve got role models and champions and advocates across the culture who are showing people by their actions what they mean.
